Royal Mail has announced the reassignment of the LE16 8 and LE15 6 to 9 postcode sectors regarding the correct administrative county of Rutland. County information is not required in British addresses, but many senders are still including county information in addresses.

After returning mail with UN-bid postmarks to senders by Chinese post offices, Taiwan Post will stamp mail with slogans for Taiwan's independence only upon request. The postmarks including "UN for Taiwan" are part of a campaign ahead of a referendum planned in March on whether Taiwan should apply to join the UN under the name Taiwan instead of its official title "Republic of China".

The liberalization of the Canadian postal system has begun. On Monday, October 29, 2007, the Canadian government introduced a bill that would drop Canada Post's exclusive privilege to deliver international letters. Representatives of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) worry that if this legislation is approved, Canada Post would not be able to satisfy its Universal Service Obligation, especially in rural and remote areas.

The first ever postal code for the 2008 Olympic Games, "102008" was officially announced in Beijing on 1 August 2007. In an interview with the China Economic Review Mr. Hu Zhong Yuan, Director of Beijing Post, first class postal services during the Olympic Games was promised.

Last Monday, the Transport and Communications Ministers of the European Union agreed on regulations for the liberalization of the postal market. The agreement is based on the vote of the EU-parliament, which was reached in first reading in July 2007 (See AddressDoctor News from July 30, 2007 ). This regulation is therefore expected to pass in the EU-parliament during the second reading without any further obstacles.

Arab News has reported that Saudi Post President Dr. Muhammad Bantan has signed an agreement on June 12th with Jeddah Mayor Adel Fakieh in order to unify postal addresses in Jeddah. The ceremony was the formal conclusion of agreements, started last year, that pave the way for other Saudi municipalities to benefit from the Saudi Post initiative known as “The New Addressing and Symbolization program”.
