In this column we answer frequently asked questions about international addresses. Today's topic is the address format of Poland. Poland is joining the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004. Sorting codes are sometimes used for areas of a town, but these do not have to appear in the address.

Flat and entrance numbers

Building numbers can be followed by an "m" or "/"; both characters indicate that a flat number follows. For example:

An additional digit may indicate the entrance of a building. Examples:

Postal code system

Polish Postal Codes have 5 digits and are written as follows:

A postal code is structured as follows:

1. place district
2. place zone
3.-5. place further sortation
